The world they find themselves in is a different place since they first were incarcerated, and a lot of it is because of who they have become since prison. Employers are discriminatory, and people around them are judgmental.
These men and women hope for the resources to survive in their new world, to make a change, to start anew, but are prevented from doing so because they are not easily accepted by others.
Ex-convicts should be given the chance to change. They need to be given opportunities to transition from their past life through employment and overall more social acceptance. Only then will recidivism rates go down, removing the expensive costs of keeping someone in prison, and overall creating a safer world.
People leaving incarceration often try their best to get a job. However, the road block they always meet contains six troubling words:
"Have you ever committed a Felony?"And so they must check "Yes" and give a further explanation to their past. Employers who view this naturally discriminate against those with felonies, even if in some cases they are better qualified than other applicants.
Data from study at Princeton University |
Employers are doing their best to hire employees that will create a safe and effective working environment. However, they often judge applicants too soon in the hiring process, and those with criminal pasts lose the opportunity to change their lives because they can't gain employment. Employers, and business must be more accepting of ex-convicts applying for jobs that are just as qualified as other applicants.
However, not only do employers need to be accepting, but ex-convicts need to be better trained on skills that they can use for becoming employed. 50% of those incarcerated don't have a High School diploma. They lack the schooling they need to get by. Thus programs, like the one in this video, need to be instituted in order to help ex-convicts obtain employment.
Overall, employment is an extremely effective way to reduce recidivism. All that needs to be done is ex-criminals need to be given the training they need to obtain a job, and they need to be less stereotyped in the labor market. Then, as ex-criminals begin to receive jobs, the community becomes a better place and the costs of prison go down.
I think the hardest part about this is getting employers to actually give these ex-convicts a chance. I mean, honestly, if I was an employer and I had some with a criminal record apply and someone without a criminal record also apply, there would be no question who I would chose. Which is horrible for the movement to lower recidivism.
ReplyDeleteOne possible idea I thought about while reading this post and watching the video: what if the church had a program like Turn About? Not only would it help society as a whole as well as these people who are trying to be better (which is the point of the Atonement), but it might also soften the hearts of these ex-criminals toward the church. I bet we'd get a lot of converts just from that. That would really make the world a better place, trading criminals for converts!
The said part is employers have a hard time employing African Americans as well, so in both cases it's still discrimination and needs to be managed some way. When I was studying this topic, it turns out that a lot of employers had no idea that it was considered discrimination to not employ ex-convicts, and that they would hire them more willingly if they knew.
DeleteWhat's interesting is the church does have a program very similar to Turn About, Desseret Industries. The DI takes people that come from rough lives and does their best to give them a better chance. I feel like the church could definitely do more like you said and it would help the people and the church for sure.
I agree that not being employable is one of the main thing holding ex-convicts back from a normal life after being in prison. I really enjoyed the video you shared; it’s nice to see that there are some people making a difference in the lives of so many. At the same time it’s daunting to realize how few prisoners have access to such programs, and how low the success rate is for the few programs that are offered currently at prisons. I hope this idea of helping people more than punishing them will become more wide spread to reduce the number of criminals coming back for repeated offenses. Good insights!
ReplyDeleteThank you. It definitely is something that needs to be changed, and people often times don't know about the problems with our current system in America and need to be informed so we can move towards making it better and helping our communities.
DeleteWith helping people more than hurting them, it has been found psychologically that when people are given help, they respond far better than if they are punished for something they have done wrong. These people just need examples of good people and they need to be given the chance they need to make a change in their life and stay away from prisons.
Having never been released from prison before (because I have never gone to prison) I cannot honestly say what I would do in that situation, but I do find this post very thought provoking. It really would be easier to just go back to the lifestyle you were living your entire life, because that is what you would know. I sure wouldn’t be able to start living the life of a farmer at a moment’s notice; I grew up in a suburban town without livestock of any kind. I agree that they need to be taught how to live a legal lifestyle upon release, or else who can blame them for slipping back into the only thing they know?
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you found this post thought provoking. It's intent was to show what is truly wrong with the way prisoners are being treated in the world and how difficult it is for them. The world is just so discriminate against those that have made wrong choices even when we all know that none of us are perfect. These people just need a chance to change, and we are not giving them that opportunity, when in the long run, it would make a big difference to help these people. It would save so much money that could be used on education and in other areas and it would ultimately change lives for the better, and that is what is truly important.
